Intuitively, it might seem like motor coaches are not environmentally friendly due to their size and gas mileage, but motorcoach transportation for meetings and events offers several sustainability advantages over many other modes of transportation, contributing to reduced carbon emissions, energy efficiency, and environmental conservation.
With awareness of these advantages, planners can communicate how motorcoach transportation can contribute to sustainability goals of their organizations.
Lifecycle Considerations: Motorcoaches have long lifecycles and are built to withstand years of service, reducing the need for frequent vehicle replacements and associated manufacturing emissions. Proper maintenance and fleet management practices can extend the lifespan of motorcoaches, maximizing their environmental benefits over time.
High Passenger Capacity and Fuel Efficiency: Motorcoaches have large passenger capacities, typically seating between 40 to 60 passengers or more, depending on the size of the vehicle. This means that a single motorcoach can transport a significant number of attendees in one trip, reducing the need for multiple smaller vehicles and minimizing overall fuel consumption and emissions. In addition, modern motorcoaches are designed to be fuel-efficient, utilizing advanced engine technologies, aerodynamic designs, and lightweight materials to optimize fuel consumption.
How Motorcoach Emissions Compares to other Modes of Transportation: In 2019, the American Bus Association Foundation (ABAF) sponsored the Texas A&M Transportation Institute (TTI) to compare the energy use and pollutants emitted by motorcoaches to those of other transportation modes. This study, updated in 2023 using the latest available information and emission rates, concluded that, “In general, motorcoaches have lower energy and emissions rates per passenger miles travelled than nearly all other similar and competing travel modes.”

How ETS Supports the Sustainability Goals of Organizations: Recognizing that ridesharing is typically the most common alternative to scheduled shuttle service during meetings and conventions, Event Transportation Systems (ETS) created a carbon footprint calculator to specifically compare motorcoach with ride-sharing emissions on a per capita basis. Planners can enter data into a calculator using their previous year’s ridership report, or they can enter estimated data including projected attendance, % of riders, number of shuttles, length of meeting, and rides per day to get results showing how motorcoaches emit fewer pollutants per person compared to ridesharing. In addition, ETS offers custom post-meeting reports that use actual ridership data to provide more in-depth metrics showing the environmental benefits of using motorcoaches vs ridesharing or personal vehicles.
Promotion of Sustainable Travel Behavior: Armed with this information, planners can provide their organizations with data that supports the use of motorcoaches as part of their sustainable meeting planning initiatives, while also promoting sustainable travel behavior among attendees by encouraging them to choose scheduled shuttles over ridesharing. These metrics can also help organizations meet the requirements for the Events Industry Council (EIC) Sustainable Standards Gold Certification, as was the case for the Water Environment Federation, an ETS customer.
In addition, by hiring experienced transportation management companies, planners can feel more confident that efficient route planning and use of well-maintained vehicles are contributing to sustainability goals for their meetings.
Ultimately, by leveraging motorcoach transportation, event organizers can reduce carbon emissions, minimize environmental impact, and contribute to a more sustainable future for the events industry.
